Bathroom Tile Installation: What to Know Before You Start
Bathroom tile can completely change the look of a bathroom, but the project needs proper planning. Layout, waterproofing, prep work, grout, and installation details all matter.
Start With the Right Tile Layout
Before installation begins, the tile layout should be planned around the room, shower walls, floor drains, niches, edges, and visible cuts. A clean layout helps avoid awkward small cuts in the corners and makes the finished bathroom look more professional.
Surface Preparation Is Important
Tile should not be installed over weak, uneven, or damaged surfaces. Floors and walls need to be properly prepared so the tile can bond correctly. In showers and wet areas, preparation is even more important because water exposure can cause serious problems if the work is not done right.
Tile and grout are not the same thing as waterproofing. Shower tile needs the correct waterproofing system behind the finished surface.
Waterproofing Matters in Showers
For shower tile, waterproofing is one of the most important steps. A proper shower system should include the right backer board, waterproof membrane, slope, drain detail, and sealed corners.
Choose the Right Tile Size
Large-format tile can create a clean modern look with fewer grout lines, but it usually requires flatter walls and more careful installation. Smaller tile can work well for shower floors, niches, and decorative areas. The right size depends on the bathroom design and the surface being tiled.
Do Not Ignore Grout Color
Grout color can change the whole look of the bathroom. Matching grout creates a softer, cleaner look. Contrasting grout makes the tile pattern stand out more. For bathrooms, it is also important to choose grout that is suitable for wet areas.
Plan the Details Early
Before starting, make sure the installer knows the tile pattern, grout color, trim choice, niche location, shower curb detail, drain type, and edge finish. These details should be decided before installation, not after the tile is already going up.
